Employment opportunities 2011

The UNEP Risoe Centre on Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development is expanding activities related to low carbon development planning and carbon finance. We therefore have new positions early in 2011 as Experts and Senior Experts.

The Centre has over the last 20 years become a leading international research and advisory centre on energy, climate and sustainable development. We work in close partnership with UN Environment Program (UNEP) and have project activities in more than 40 developing countries. The Centre collaborates with a large number of international and especially developing country government and research institutions. The successful candidates will join an international team of about 40 professionals in an interdisciplinary work environment.

Job description

The experts will participate in the Centre’s international projects, research and analytical programmes, especially in the areas of:

  • Carbon Finance, including activities such as project management, analytical work development and capacity building for the application of the Clean Development Mechanism, as well as in identifying and developing new methodological and project areas, including programmatic CDM and REDD, bio energy and transport.

  • Mitigation Policy, particularly to support the development of strategies for national low carbon development in developing countries to enable preparation and “quick start” on Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs). Activities will include analytical work on guidelines for NAMA development, MRV approaches, and tools for analyzing and prioritizing mitigation actions.

Qualifications

Candidates for both the Expert and Senior Expert position require a degree in economics, engineering, planning, natural science or other relevant discipline, at PhD or equivalent level. For the senior positions an additional requirement is several years of working experience in relevant areas and demonstrated ability to initiate new projects in co-operation with international institutions. The working language at the Centre is English.

Terms of employment

Salary: Foreign staff at the Centre are employed according to the general terms valid for scientific staff at Risoe, but individual supplements will be negotiated. The gross monthly salary can be expected to be in the range of 5000 to 7000 EUR, depending on past experience and qualifications. Foreign employees with children can in addition to this receive 4000 EUR yearly per child. Risoe covers moving expenses up to 3300 EUR, and installation costs (including residence permit's cost) up to 1300 EUR.

Taxation : Foreign researchers are taxed under the special 25% Danish tax scheme for foreign experts. This means that foreign staff pays 25 % tax of the gross salary and a further 8 % AM-contribution of the salary after tax. The total amount paid in tax and contribution will thus be approximately 31% of the gross salary. Further information on the tax scheme is available in English using the following link: http://www.skat.dk/SKAT.aspx?oId=107035&vId=203462

Contracts: Contracts are offered on a two year term with possibility for extensions.

Work environment: The UNEP Risoe Centre has a dynamic multicultural work environment with experts from 17 different countries. URC is a family friendly work place, and is able to combine the demands of work and high academic standards with flexibility. We practice management based on dialogue.
