Renewable energy in Pacific Island Countries

"Capacity building on wind energy for Pacific Island Countries" aimed at strengthening the capability of Pacific Island Countries (PICs) to effectively plan and manage the integration of wind generation into their electricity sector. The project was financed by the Danish International Development Assistance (Danida) through the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), with complementary financing from the Government of France.

The project was implemented jointly by URC; the University of the South Pacific, School of Pure and Applied Science (USP/SPAS); and the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC). URC was assisted by the Wind Energy Department of Risoe National Laboratory.

Main activities included the development of a post-graduate course on wind power at SPAS, the installation of an experimental turbine, training of SPAS's staff responsible for running the post-graduate course, the preparation of wind energy development plans for PICs with promising wind potential, and a regional seminar.
