No. 6 December 1994
The Programme Committee for the International Symposium on Electricity, Health and the Environment: Comparative Assessment in Support of Decision Making is pleased to announce that this Symposium will be convened from 16 to 19 October 1995 in Vienna, Austria.
The Symposium is being held in the framework of the inter-agency joint project on "Databases and mEthodologies for Comparative Assessment of Different Energy Sources for electricity generation (DECADES)". The Programme Committee, established by the Joint Steering Committee for the project, is composed of representatives from the organisations participating in the DECADES project, namely: the Commission of the European Communities (CEC), the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD/NEA), the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development of the World Bank (IBRD) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
There is increasing need for comparative assessment of different options and strategies for electricity supply, incorporating health and environmental aspects as well as economic considerations. Improved methodologies and tools for this purpose are being developed and implemented. The main objective of the Symposium is to bring together analysts, planners and senior experts, for exchanging information and views on approaches to comparative assessment and their use in the planning and decision making process for the electricity sector.
As a means to promote co-operation and information exchange among such comparative assessment activities, an inter-agency joint project on Databases and mEthodologies for Comparative Assessment of Different Energy Sources for electricity generation (DECADES) is being carried out by CEC, ESCAP, IAEA, IBRD, IIASA, OECD/NEA, OPEC, UNIDO and WMO, with contributions from other organisations such as the Uranium Institute, UNEP and WHO.
This Symposium is organised in the framework of the DECADES project, for the purpose of giving opportunities to discuss issues related to comparative assessment of electricity supply options and strategies and for presenting results from international and national studies on this matter.
The presentations and discussions will focus on: the requirements and needs, on the part of planners and decision makers, for comprehensive comparative information on different electricity supply options and strategies; the capabilities and limitations of the data bases and analytical models that are available to meet these information needs, taking into account the present status of scientific knowledge and the information which can be reliably collected. Based upon the findings from these discussions, the Symposium will draw conclusions and make concrete recommendations on the need for follow-up, in order to further enhance the data bases and tools for comparative assessment and to promote their wider use in the decision making process.
Preliminary results and finding from a number of on-going international, regional and national projects on comparative assessment in the electricity sector will be presented and reviewed, such as:
